Not sure how 100 crore helps me as an actress: Anushka Sharma

By Hindustan Times

Anushka Sharma's last film 'Jab Tak Hai Jaan' may have managed to get her into the elite 100 crore club in Bollywood but the actress feels the new benchmark would not help her much in her individual career. With the feat, the 24-year-old actress also got closer to contemporaries like
Sonakshi Sinha and Asin, who have the highest number of century hits to their credit along with seniors like Kareena Kapoor and Katrina Kaif.

"I don't really understand how much being a part of this 100 crore club genuinely helps me as an actress. I don't have experience to still ascertain how a 100 crore success could make any difference to my career.

"I am happy that people have liked my film but the way I look at it, sometimes there are films that cater to certain segment of audience and may not always get those crores coming in. 'Jab Tak Hai Jaan' has made money but I don't see any of that affecting me," Anushka told PTI.

The actress, who made her debut with 'Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi' opposite Shah Rukh Khan, ended 2012 on a high with director Yash Chopra's last film 'Jab Tak Hai Jaan' turning out to be a success at the box office.

"I am really happy that the year ended well for me. People liked me for my performance and to hear something like that is always nice. Honestly, being a part of Yashji's film was a huge honour," she said.

Anushka, who has worked with actors like SRK, Ranveer Singh, Akshay Kumar and Shahid Kapoor, will be seen opposite Imran Khan in her upcoming Vishal Bhardwaj film 'Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola' and she is excited about the pairing.

"This is our first film together and it would be special for everyone. Since we have not done a film together in the past, our pairing should be interesting. Our combination is striking with Pankaj Kapoor as the third main lead."

Set in the rustic surroundings of a village in Haryana, 'Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola' is a comedy-drama about Harry played by Pankaj, a wealthy industrialist, who loves his drink, his daughter Bijlee (Anushka) and the unusual bond they both share with Harry's man Friday, Matru (Imran).

The film also stars Arya Babbar and Shabana Azmi in supporting roles and is slated to release on January 11.

When asked about her character in the film, Anushka said, "I think Bijlee is not apologetic about anything. As a character she is someone who likes to shock people. She likes to get reactions out of people. Also, she is overtly practical about things in her life."

This year Anushka will be working in Anurag Kashyap's 'Bombay Velvet' and Rajkumar Hirani's political satire, 'PK' opposite Aamir Khan.

Every actor is an attention seeker: Anushka Sharma

Anushka Sharma Bijlee 200x300 Hailing from an army background, Anushka Sharma has led a very quiet and disciplined life, but confesses her profession has now made her an attention-seeker – an “occupational hazard” for all actors.

“I am not spoilt as I was brought up in an army background. But every actor is an attention-seeker. It is an occupational hazard for us. If I don’t seek attention, I will not be doing my work well,” Anushka told IANS in an interview.

The actress made her Bollywood debut in 2008 with “Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi” and later went on to do films like “Badmaash Company”, “Band Baaja Baaraat”, “Ladies v/s Ricky Bahl” and most recently “Jab Tak Hai Jaan”.

In a short span of four years, Anushka has carved a niche for herself in Bollywood and the 24-year-old says she wants to use her success to do things on her own terms.

“You should use success as a way of doing your work in a better way. I want to be successful to be able to do things on my own terms. You should use your stardom and success to be able to pull people into the theatre. That’s what I would want to do with my success,” Anushka said.

Asked what her mantra to survive in the industry is, she said: “Do your work and mind your own business; that is the only way.”

Anushka admits she wasn’t sure about the film industry before she joined it, but her views changed once she became a part of it.

“I used to think it is a dirty field because of these news channels playing dumb stories. But now I feel that when you get a lot here, you need to give back equally too. So whoever is the biggest star right now is working that much harder,” she said.

After garnering critical acclaim for her performance in “Jab Tak Hai Jaan”, Anushka will now be seen in Vishal Bhardwaj’s “Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola” opposite Imran Khan and Pankaj Kapoor. It releases Jan 11.

The actress found the role of Bijlee challenging as it was difficult for her to relate to it.

“This is the first time I dealt with something which I just could not relate to. When I was growing up I was not at all spoilt. There was no scope for throwing tantrums in my house. Plus, she (Bijlee) is not a stereotypical spoilt brat. I could not look at my personal references for this. I had to be like someone else totally,” she said.

Anushka admits that though she felt intimidated by Pankaj Kapoor, she had learnt a lot from the veteran actor.

“Pankaj Kapoor is one of the best actors one has ever seen because he has been a theatre actor. He has learnt to blank out people and the crowd and focus. That is one of the strengths an actor must possess,” she said.

“I was intimidated by him. He doesn’t talk much so you are always on tenterhooks around him. But it is such a pleasure seeing him act. He doesn’t drink and he has played an alcoholic,” she said. – IANS

Movies that set fashion trends

By Hindustan Times

As the year kicks off and actors inspire new trends with their on-screen attire, here are five recent films that made style statements. Over the years, the silver screen has inspired a number of fashion trends. From Sadhna’s iconic haircut in the ’60s to Kareena Kapoor’s T-shirt over patialas in
Jab We Met (2007). We get Priya Tanna, editor, Vogue India, to pick out the most striking ones in the past five years.

Band Baaja Baraat (2010)
Anushka Sharma in snug short kurtis and generous patialas brought the flavour of Punjab to our wardrobes. Unapologetically bright, vibrant and vivacious, with a distinct Bunty Aur Babli (2005) hangover, the film raised a sartorial toast to the ubiquitous salwar kurti.

Aisha (2010)
For me and for every girl whose 20-something self was inspired by Alicia Silverstone’s Cher Horowitz in Clueless, this film is a throwback to those times. Preppy, pretty, lady-like fashion this is the film that made Sonam Kapoor Bollywood’s fiercest proponent and purveyor of style.

Student of the Year (2012)
Gossip Girl met Pretty Little Liars with Alia Bhatt’s Shanaya, who made us wish we could go back to school. Her wardrobe comprised labels ranging from Alice + Olivia and Manish Malhotra to Herm├Ęs, her look was young, glamorous and cute to the core.

English Vinglish (2012)
Can you take a cotton sari, a humble bindi, and a trench coat and rock the look? English Vinglish showed us that you certainly can. As Sridevi appeared shot after shot in a delicious palette of cotton saris, with her hair held back in an unassuming braid, accessorised by a bindi and those expressive eyes, it was easy to fall in love with her crisp, clean and demure housewife, Shashi, as she embarked upon an interesting personal journey in America.

Cocktail (2012)
The ultimate makeover film. Take a good girl like Deepika Padukone, and put her in leather skirts, men’s shirts and itsy bikinis. Give her bed head, and a bronze glow and you have a look most of us dream of, but very few dare.

Hunt on for actress opposite Sunny Deol

By Hindustan Times

After Ameesha Patel walked out of Singh Saheb The Great, director Anil Sharma says the team is on the lookout for a replacement. She was to feature opposite Sunny Deol. "We have not finalised the leading lady yet. Right now we are shooting only Sunny's major part in Bhopal. Once we are done with his shoot, we will hunt for the leading lady," Sharma told IANS.

In mid-December 2012, Ameesha announced she is stepping out of the project due to "ever-changing schedules".

When Sharma was asked about the reason, he said: "Ameesha is a friend. If at all we need her back in the film, I can call her anytime. She will never say no."

Sharma last worked with Sunny and Ameesha in the 2001 hit "Gadar: Ek Prem Katha".

He says Sunny has become more professional over the years, and shooting for "Singh Saheb The Great" reminds him of shooting for "Gadar: Ek Prem Katha".

"It's always fun to work with Sunny. He has always been a perfectionist and professional. Now over the years he has become more professional. It reminds me of our 'Gadar' days," said Sharma.

Sunny plays the role of a collector in the film, which is a satire on corruption.

The first schedule of "Singh Saheb The Great" will continue in Bhopal till Feb 15, 2013.

Hrithik Roshan rings in New Year with family on private yacht

Hrithik Roshan with his grandparents 200x169 Bollywood heartthrob Hrithik Roshan flew his entire family to Bangkok and later boarded a private yacht with his family to welcome in the New Year.

The actor hired a yacht and partied along with wife Sussanne, father Rakesh, mother Pinky, grandparents, sister Sunaina, uncle Rajesh, cousins, aunts and his two sons – Hrehaan and Hridhaan.

“Hrithik hired a private yacht, which had a capacity of 20-25 people when he went to Bangkok. The entire family reached there a day before New Year’s Eve,” said a source.

“They spent some time shopping in the city and Hrithik made sure his family was well taken care of wherever they went. The yacht was his idea as he wanted to break away from the routine of celebrating in a luxury suite,” the source added.

The entire family also grooved to some of the foot-tapping numbers.

“There was music and dancing on the yacht and not just Hrithik but his entire family grooved to the foot-tapping numbers. Hrithik was very happy as he doesn’t get as much time while shooting. Back home, party places tend to get very crowded. For Hrithik bringing the New Year with his family was the high point, he enjoyed every minute of it. He loves family time,” the source added. – IANS

Arjun Rampal Tweets the Truth!

arjun rampal 200x250 While Arjun Rampal is busy with the promotions of his upcoming film “Inkaar”, the rumor mills seem to be working overtime, spreading baseless stories about him.

Arjun, preferring to keep away from such rumors, recently tweeted rubbishing the news on the speculation about his equation with the Khans. The tweet stated, “Read a ridiculous article in Mumbai Mirror. Absolute hog wash bullshit, advice to MM go play ur games elsewhere.Donk journalism at its best”

The article referred to in his tweet was a case of yet another over-enthusiastic journalism claiming that Arjun has taken sides in the alleged Bollywood ‘camps’.

Arjun has maintained that he doesn’t believe in camps and shares a great relationship with all his co-actors. The actor has always been open to working with everyone in the industry and has never restrained from taking up good work on the basis of the equation he shares with them.

With such straight forward attitude towards work, Arjun Rampal surely put an end to all such journalism gimmicks!! – IANS

Victim of smear campaign, says rapper Honey Singh

honey singh singer 200x300 Bhangra-pop singer-rapper Honey Singh claims he is a victim of a vicious smear campaign launched by his rivals to finish off his rising career as India’s foremost live entertainer.

Shaken and nonplussed, Honey didn’t know what hit him when, on Monday hours before the new year was ushered in with telling somberness, he was targeted viciously for his allegedly anti-woman misogynist songs, especially a number offensively titled “Main Hoon Ek Balaatkari”.

The song’s title and “message” have offended a nation reeling under the impact of the heinous gang-rape in Delhi that took the victim’s life last week.

A virulent campaign to boycott Honey Singh and his music was launched on several micro-blogging sites. An FIR was also lodged against Honey for obscenity in Lucknow. To top it all, on New Year’s eve Honey’s proposed concert in Gurgaon had to be cancelled due to pressures from the outside.

Fearing for his life, in a startling revelation made exclusively to this writer Honey Singh claims the offensive song is not his at all.

“I swear on my music, I’ve neither written nor sung those offensive songs. I’d never dream of singing a song in praise of rape. The thought is nauseating to me. I’d rather give up singing than attain popularity in such cheap and cheesy ways,” he said.

“I respect women…What I am going through is another form Of rape,” Honey Singh said.

Honey says the song has been released on the internet by an imposter. “I’ve sent notices to Youtube and other websites which have uploaded the offensive number. I am shocked that such a song could even be believed to be mine. I come from a family where women are respected. And I’d never disrespected women by espousing rape.”

Honey also claims that the other obscene song entitled “Ch..t” which has been floating on the internet for years under his name is not his.

“I completely disown both these obscene numbers. I’ve nothing to do with them. My lawyers are trying to find out who’s doing this to malign me. I’m being targeted for a rape of another kind altogether. What is being done to me is among the lowest of violation of human dignity,” he said.

Honey says the smear campaign is being undertaken by jealous rivals. “They can’t bear to see a villager from Hoshiarpur like me become so successful. My fans know the truth. I’d never disrespect women. I have been brought up to treat women with courtesy and dignity,” he said.

The worried rapper who is popular in north India finds the timing of the tirade against him to be suspicious.

“Just when the country is reeling under the impact of the ghastly rape crime a song about rape is being attributed to me. And another song that I have been fighting for years to have removed as my doing, is in the public eye. I am being targeted for wrongs that I didn’t commit,” he said.

Honey feels he is being made a target to divert attention from the real issue.

“Atrocities against women are happening all around us. Why are my songs suddenly being seen as a root-cause of evil? If music could actually cause damage shouldn’t songs like ‘Bande Mataram’ and ‘Ae mere watan ke logon’ prevent Indians from hurting fellow-human beings?” he asked.

Angry, hurt, wounded and perplexed by the sudden swerve in his career Honey said: “I’d request politicians to stop diverting attention from the actual issues that effect the country. Please stop resorting to soft targets like singers and musicians as scapegoats. If anyone can prove I’m behind those anti-women songs I’m ready to give up music.”

Meanwhile sources close to the musician say Honey Singh has been receiving death threats and is under the constant vigilance of his personal security staff.

Honey is under the moral scanner not only from a nation in no mood for anti-women pop-culture, but also from his own family.

“I come from a business family. I rebelled from my father to become a musician. Now after hearing of these filthy songs my father called me up to ask, ‘Beta, did you take to music to do this kind of thing?’ I’d never shame my family, my country, the women of my country and myself,” he said.

Tell him that his songs have gone ultra-viral since the scandal broke out Honey retorted: “I’m sorry. But I am not interested in getting cheap popularity. I’ve earned my success through sincere hard work.”

“And that’s the only success I want. Do you know I’ve sung a song about Bhagat Singh? How come no one knows about this song? Why are we only interested in scandalous controversial things?” he asked.

Honey says he knows the people behind this smear campaign launched against him. “I’m a village boy who has gone international. Other singers trying the same haven’t been able to achieve the same. They are unhappy with my success,” he said.

“Today when I see musicians sitting judgement over my music, asking for my ban, in panel discussions on television I feel sorry for them. I’m sorry to say they’re just exploiting the memory of the girl who was a victim of that heinous crime. My fans are with me. They believe in me. That’s all that matters,” he said. – IANS

Karan Johar: We’re heading towards a new age golden era

By Hindustan Times

The year 2012 was excellent for the industry and there’s plenty to look forward to in 2013. There are many movies being made next year, each different from the other, so there’s a lot of variety. Besides, as always, expectations are rising and that is necessary. If there are no expectations,
you’ll miss the push to perform.

There were all sorts of films in 2012. A large variety. We had the usual commercial films, but then we also had films that came from unconventional genres.

For instance, we had regular masala films like Rowdy Rathore, Ek Tha Tiger and Agneepath, but we also had movies such as Kahaani, Vicky Donor and Gangs Of Wasseypur.

They were all so different, but they all did so well. In many ways they were extremes, but there were no disappointments. And next year will be larger and better in terms of the movies emerging from the Hindi film industry. There will be newer faces and newer subjects.

In fact, 2012 was a highly promising year — and I believe that 2013 will make things completely clear. This year, the benchmark was set very high; so 2013 will have to live up to that and go beyond it.

We’ve now seen that both kinds of cinema — mainstream and offbeat — contribute to each other and to the industry at various levels.

Mainstream cinema contributes to the large repertoire of cinema and the other kind adds hugely to the ever so high and ever increasing box-office demands of the industry.

In the last one year, the Hindi film industry has seen a 10-12% growth rate. Going by that, we’re on a roll. It just means that cinema is going to grow in a bigger and better way next year. So everyone has a reason to celebrate.

Personally, I feel that the industry is in its best phase at this time, and we’re heading towards what I call the ‘new age golden era’. We last had a golden era in the 1960s and we’re heading towards achieving it once again.

Emraan Hashmi, Vidya Balan go digital to promote Ghanchakkar

By Hindustan Times

Taking a leaf out of the Harry Potter series, Bollywood marketing teams have come up with comic books and video games based on the movies they’re promoting. Whether it was RA.One (2011), or more recently Agent Vinod (2012), this marketing strategy has proven to be popular. And now for their next, Ghanchakkar, starring Vidya Balan and Emraan Hashmi, UTV Motion Pictures will release a video game as well.

A source close to the film says, “For the first time Emraan and Vidya will have a video game based on their reel-life characters. Emraan plays a safe breaker and Vidya is his quirky, Punjabi housewife in the film. The game will follow their journey together, exactly on the lines of the film’s story.” Rajkumar Gupta, the director of Ghanchakkar, will also be creatively involved in the making of the game. “The game will be a quirky thriller, just like the film, and the director is working at making sure of ensuring that,” says the source.

The source goes on to reveal that Vidya and Emraan will shoot for two days in the first week of May for the game’s graphics. “They have to do a very basic shoot so that from there on, the game can be digitally developed,” says the source. It will be released soon after the film hits the big screen sometime mid-next year. When contacted, Rajkumar confirms the news saying, “It will be very exciting to have a computer game in which Emraan and Vidya will play their characters from my film. We all are making sure that we add all the nuances (from the characters) into the game, to make it a nail biter.”

James Bond's Skyfall sets £100m record in Britain, joins Oscar run

By Hindustan Times

The latest James Bond film Skyfall has become the first movie ever to take £100 million at the British box office, it was announced Monday. The 23rd official Bond film surpassed the landmark, equivalent of $162 million (123 million euros), after becoming the highest grossing film ever in Britain earlier this month when it overtook the £94 million generated by Avatar.

Skyfall achieved the figure in just 40 days, while Avatar (2009) took 11 months to amass its total.

Globally, the new Bond film has taken more than $1 billion.

It is a mark of the franchise's continuing appeal as it celebrates its 50th anniversary.

Daniel Craig's third appearance as British secret agent Bond is still on general release more than two months after it first hit British cinemas.

The movie sees Bond battling with villain Raoul Silva (played by Javier Bardem), who aims to take revenge on his former boss M (Judi Dench).

Bond blockbuster Skyfall joined already Oscar-tipped films like Steven Spielberg's Lincoln and Iran spy drama Argo on the Producers Guild of America best film shortlist, it was announced on Wednesday.

Skyfall joins Oscar runners in US producers' nods
Osama bin Laden manhunt movie Zero Dark Thirty and Quentin Tarantino's brutal western Django Unchained were also among 10 films nominated by the PGA, whose choices have a history of pointing towards Oscar glory.

Skyfall by director Sam Mendes is the first 007 movie to make it onto the PGA shortlist, putting it alongside a bevy of films that have already gained Oscars buzz as Hollywood's annual awards season hots up.

Others nominated for the PGA's Darryl F. Zanuck Producer of the Year Award include musical adaptation Les Miserables by Tom Hooper and Life of Pi by Taiwanese-American Ang Lee, both also already Oscar tipped.

SkyfallThe PGA shortlist also includes Wes Anderson's Moonrise Kingdom, Happiness Therapy by David O. Russell and Beasts of the Southern Wild, all less talked about so far in Tinseltown this season.

The PGA awards are closely watched because the winner of its top prize -- to be announced on January 26 this year -- has gone on to the win the Best Picture Oscar 16 times in the last 23 years, the Hollywood Reporter noted.

Star kids set to debut in 2013

By Hindustan Times

While there were quite a few debutant movies last year, 2013 looks even more promising with the young brigade. Here we list some of the celeb kids set to make their debut in 2013.

1. Tiger Shroff
Jackie Shroff’s son, 21-year-old Tiger, probably has the maximum hype built up around his debut film. His dad, Jackie, made his debut with Subhash Ghai’s Hero; Tiger is all set to be launched with Sajid Nadiadwala’s Heropanti, which will be directed by Sabbir Khan. This young boy has been in the news for working out with actor Aamir Khan, who is also apparently grooming him and overseeing his entry into Bollywood.

2. Athiya Shetty
Sunil Shetty’s daughter Athiya is now ready to face the camera. Apparently, the girl is likely to be launched opposite newcomer Armaan Jain (Kareena Kapoor’s cousin) under Saif Ali Khan Productions.

3. Junaid Khan
Aamir Khan’s elder son, Junaid, who’s still studying, may not be facing the camera immediately, but he will be assisting director Raju Hirani on P.K., which has his father in the lead. In fact, Aamir had told us that the final choice to follow his dream lies with Junaid, but as a father he has advised him to learn more about filmmaking by becoming an assistant director.

4. Karan Deol
He’s a Deol, so he has two generations of acting genes in his constitution — grandfather Dharmendra and dad Sunny Deol (also uncles Bobby Deol and Abhay Deol and aunt Esha Deol). Sunny Deol has apparently already started grooming his elder son. For starters, Karan has been roped in as assistant director to Sangeeth Sivan for Yamla Pagla Deewana 2. His dad will also launch him in an action film this year.

5. Armaan Jain
Armaan Jain belongs to the first family of the film industry. His mother is Raj Kapoor’s daughter, Reema Jain, and his cousins are the illustrious Ranbir, Karisma and Kareena Kapoor. And reportedly, Armaan will be launched under brother-in-law Saif Ali Khan’s banner, Saif Ali Khan Productions. He even assisted director Shakun Batra on the Kareena Kapoor-Imran Khan starrer Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu (2012).

6. Siddhanth Kapoor
He was initially supposed to be launched by Salman Khan and then Sanjay Dutt. But finally, Shakti Kapoor’s son, Siddhanth, will now be seen sharing screen space with John Abraham and Anil Kapoor in Sanjay Gupta’s Shootout At Wadala. Siddhanth, who is also a DJ, will be seen in Anurag Kashyap’s next, Ugly, as well.

7. Harshwardhan Kapoor
His dad is Anil Kapoor and his sister is the ultra-glamourous Sonam Kapoor. Yes, lots of pressure. This lad will star in his first film, Coming Home, which is a short movie directed by Steven Roy Thomas. And his co-star in the movie will be Katrina Kaif’s younger sister, Isabel. If we’re to go by reports, Harshwardhan has said that this movie is not his or Isabel’s launch vehicle. Meanwhile, Harshwardhan is also assisting director Anurag Kashyap on his next, the Ranbir Kapoor-Anushka Sharma starrer Bombay Velvet.

8. Sasha Agha
Remember actor Salma Agha (of Heena fame)? Now, her daughter, who is all of 19 years old, is Yash Raj Films’ latest find. Sasha is all set to make her Bollywood debut with YRF’s Aurangzeb. The actor, who is paired opposite Arjun Kapoor, is already being termed ‘hot property’ in the industry.

9. Sara Ali Khan
Saif Ali Khan’s elder daughter Sara, who is apparently off to London next year to study, may in all likelihood be part of the entertainment world. Reportedly, after several public appearances, she’s being noticed by filmmakers and could possibly make her acting debut too.

10. Jhanvi Kapoor
Though reports suggest that Sridevi’s elder daughter Jhanvi may be off to study abroad next year, rumours are abuzz that she may follow her mother’s footsteps into Bollywood.
