Akshay Kumar to break his own record with Khiladi 786

By Hindustan Times

In a year that has seen a record number of 100 crore hits being dished out by Bollywood, everyone from Salman Khan and Aamir Khan to Akshay Kumar, Ajay Devgn and Ranbir Kapoor has consolidated his place in the exclusive club. While quite a few records have been made and broken, the year was particularly special for Akshay Kumar who managed to bring on two such films in his kitty.

While Sajid Nadiadwala's Housefull 2 was the first to do so, Sanjay Leela Bhansali's production Rowdy Rathore turned out to be his biggest opener ever. Now all eyes are on whether Khiladi 786, Akshay's co-production with Himesh Reshammiya, would be able to surpass this feat.

Akshay"Sajid Khan had promised Akshay that Housefull 2 would take the biggest opening ever of his career and he delivered when the film netted over Rs. 43 crores in just three days. Later Prabhudheva's 'masala' flavour worked immensely for Rowdy Rathore and the film topped the Rs. 48 crore mark, hence taking Akshay a notch higher. By the look of things, debutant director Ashish Mohan could well be aiming at a minimum of 50 crores weekend for Khiladi 786", says a source.

One waits to see if this is indeed the magical number that Akshay manages for his 'masala' flick, and in the process ends up topping his own record.

"50 crore is a fabulous number indeed and doesn't seem unreachable either. After all, the film's music is a chartbuster, Asin is a lucky mascot for her leading men and Akshay is on a roll as well. Moreover films belonging to this genre have been working immensely. Also, the film is being released on a record number of screens i.e. 2,786, which by the way also goes with the film's title. Not to forget that by the time Khiladi 786 releases, it would be close to a month since the release of Son Of Sardaar, last film which did well on the single screens", the source adds.

However, those associated with the film are keeping their expectations in check.

An insider reveals, "Given the film's budget and the price at which it has been sold, whether there is a record or not, Akshay can well be expected to be happy even if anything over Rs. 40 crore is scored. That would be no less fantastic?"

2013: Promising talents in Bollywood

By Hindustan Times

Every year, there’s a new crop of actors who we see on Hindi screen for the first time. Some make it big, some don’t. Here’s looking at a bunch who will make their Bollywood debuts this year, each hoping for a firm footing in the industry.

Sushant Singh Rajput
The TV actor is best known for his role as Manav Deshmukh in the soap, Pavitra Rishta. He was also seen in dance reality series Zara Nachke Dikha and Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa. His popularity on the small screen ensured that he bagged a couple of promising Bollywood projects in no time.

UPCOMING PROJECTS:
Kai Po Che: He is playing one of the leads in director Abhishek Kapoor’s film, which is based on author Chetan Bhagat’s novel, The 3 Mistakes Of My Life. Sushant plays an aspiring cricketer in this film on friendship.
nP.K.: Even before he could prove himself as an actor on the big screen, Sushant bagged a role in Rajkumar Hirani’s directorial venture alongside Aamir Khan and Anushka Sharma.
To-be-announced YRF films: The production house has signed a three-film contract with him. The projects are yet to be announced.

USP:
Sushant is a skilled dancer. Being a known face on TV, the audience will connect with him instantly.

Dhanush
South actor Venkatesh Prabhu Kasthuri Raja, aka Dhanush, became a rage with the song ‘Kolaveri di’. The Tamil actor, playback singer, lyricist and producer has several successful films like Thiruda Thirudi (2003), Polladhavan (2007), Kutty (2010), Uthama Puthiran (2010) and 3 (2012) to his credit.

UPCOMING PROJECTS:
Raanjhnaa: He is making his Bollywood debut with this film, opposite Sonam Kapoor. The romantic film is being directed by Anand L Rai of Tanu Weds Manu fame.

USP:
His ‘Kolaveri di’ has already made him a popular figure among audiences across India. His Hindi film debut is sure to create a buzz too.

Kristina Akheeva
She is a Russian model-turned-actor, who will make her debut with the franchise Yamla Pagla Deewana.

UPCOMING PROJECTS:
Yamla Pagla Deewana 2: This is the sequel to the 2011 hit, where all three Deols — Dharmendra, Sunny and Bobby — come together for a quirky action-comedy.

USP:
She certainly has the body and the face for showbiz. Bollywood also loves
exotic-looking women. Plus, she debuts with a lead role.

Rhea Chakraborty
The MTV VJ-turned-actor started her career with the Telugu film Tuneega Tuneega (2012). She is now making her Bollywood debut in a Yash Raj Films movie.

UPCOMING PROJECTS:
Mere Dad Ki Maruti: It’s a comedy set against the backdrop of a loud Punjabi wedding in Chandigarh, and is directed by debutant Ashima Chibber.

USP:
The VJ who has appeared in in MTV shows like Fantastic Five alongside Ayushmann Khurrana is popular with youngsters.

Girish Taurani
He is making his debut in a Prabhudheva film. He has been paired with Shruti Haasan, daughter of south superstar Kamal Haasan.

UPCOMING PROJECTS:
Ramaiya Vastavaiya: The romantic film is the Hindi adaptation of Prabhudheva’s directorial debut and Telugu blockbuster, Nuvvostanante Nenoddantana (2005).

USP:
There’s always space for yet another good-looking young man in Bollywood. Plus, having Taurani as your surname (his father, Kumar Taurani, heads a leading music label) doesn’t hurt at all.

Ram Charan Teja
He is an established south actor and the son of Telugu superstar Chiranjeevi. He is making his Bollywood debut in the remake of one of Amitabh Bachchan’s biggest hits, Zanjeer.

UPCOMING PROJECTS:
Zanjeer: A remake of the 1973 hit, he plays a police officer. This iconic role played a huge part in establishing Bachchan’s image as the ‘angry young man’.

USP:
Being part of the Zanjeer remake itself is his USP. Not taking anything away from the actor, it is the comparisons with Big B that has created buzz around him.

Tamannaah Bhatia
Even though Tamannaah is from Mumbai, she is a big star down south. She will be seen in Sajid Khan’s remake of the 1983 hit, Himmatwala.

UPCOMING PROJECTS:
n Himmatwala: It’s a modern take on the Jeetendra-Sridevi starrer. Ajay Devgn and Tamannaah play the lead roles.

USP:
She’s hardly the new kid on the block, given her experience in Tamil and Telugu films. She started her career with a flop Hindi film, but it means that she has an idea of how things work in Bollywood.

Small screen too small for Bollywood’s A-listers

amitabh kbc 200x150 With desi channels adapting international shows like “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire” and “Got Talent”, fans in India are quite used to stars such as Amitabh Bachchan or Madhuri Dixit popping up on TV screens as hosts or judges. But will Bollywood biggies ever take up acting in fiction series seriously?

Hindi film stars have generally steered clear of the small screen. Quite unlike their Hollywood counterparts, who have taken to the small screen in a pretty big way and happily feature in sitcoms too.

Julia Roberts, who will be seen in TV series “The Normal Heart”, is the most recent case in point. Other popular Hollywood A-listers like Ashton Kutcher and Charlie Sheen were seen in the sitcom “Two-And-A-Half-Men”. And “Grey’s Anatomy” features Katherine Heigl.

But Indian TV screens have mostly been devoid of such participation from known cine-stars.

There have been some exceptions of course. In 1998, Om Puri and Naseeruddin Shah played the lead roles in the successful serials “Kakaji Kahin” and “Mirza Ghalib”, respectively, for Doordarshan.

Bollywood’s Dreamgirl Hema Malini did the successful dance-based show “Nupur” in the 1990s. But after that there was a lull.

In early 2000, Hema and Karisma Kapoor tried to revive the trend with “Kamini Damini” (2004) and “Karishma – The Miracles of Destiny” (2003), which also featured Arshad Warsi and Sanjay Suri, respectively. But their efforts failed to yield the desired results.

If the Karisma-starrer went off air after a few months, Hema’s show couldn’t replicate the success story of “Nupur”.

Superstar Shah Rukh Khan, who took a big leap from TV to films, raised hopes of a turnaround in that trend when he expressed a desire to return to his roots.

“I had a discussion with late Mukul Anandji and since then we have been thinking that all the big stars of Bollywood should come together and make a TV series.

“It will be interesting if Bollywood people would come together and make a 10-part or 12-part series, just like ‘Buniyaad’ and ‘Hum Log’… I am open to doing it if there is a good story to entertain the audience,” he told reporters recently.

Apart from Shah Rukh, actors who have made a transition from TV soaps to films include Irrfan, Vidya Balan and R. Madhavan.

Salman Khan feels that television is too much of hard work. “Reality shows are about one season, but when you do a serial you are stuck in it for 10 -15 years,” Salman told IANS.

Aruna Irani, who is known for her dance numbers and character roles in films and has also been quite active on the small screen, tries to analyse why Bollywood actors haven’t taken to fiction shows on TV.

“Silver screen is silver screen. TV serials are considered a step down as compared to films. People have always considered it less than a movie,” Aruna, who continues her association with TV through “Parichay-Nayee Zindagi Kay Sapno Ka”, told IANS.

Another hurdle is that money and fame are shortlived on TV, says film critic Vikas Mohan.

“There is more money and fame on silver screen. With television, fame is limited till the show is on air. Once the show is over, no one remembers the artists. So, (film) artists prefer to keep themselves connected only to the big screen,” he said.

Time constraint also stops stars from taking up soaps, adds Samir Soni, who has long balanced TV and movie roles.

“Actors in films don’t want to take that time off. They can do hosting, but for a daily soap you have to make a conscious commitment. In movies, the gestation period is so long… It may take a year to come,” he added.

If Samir did films like “Lajja”, “Fashion” and “I Hate Luv Stories”, he also featured in daily soaps like “Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahi” and is currently seen in “Parichay-Nayee Zindagi Kay Sapno Ka”. – IANS

Imran Khan finds it scary to work with Pankaj Kapur

By Hindustan Times

Actor Imran Khan, who is sharing celluloid space with Pankaj Kapoor for the first time in Matru Ki Bijli Ka Mandola, says working with the veteran actor can be unnerving. "Pankaj-ji is a fantastic actor, but working with him is very scary," Imran said here Saturday during a promotional event for his film.

"As soon as the director says 'action', he explodes as a bomb and the actor who is standing in front of him has to be ready to take whatever he is going to do, because if you are not ready, then the whole scene may get spoilt. So, you have to be alert and have to be on your toes. It is scary," he added.

In "Matru...", Imran and Pankaj will be seen playing the characters Matru and Mandola, respectively. The film, releasing Jan 11, also features actress Anushka Sharma.

Many relate Imran with the romantic avatar he has displayed on screen through films like "Jaane Tu...Ya Jaane Na", "I Hate Luv Storys" and "Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu", but he says in real life, he isn't so at all.

"I am not romantic at all. I can't do this - buying gifts, giving roses and all that. I feel that if you are serious about a relationship, it is more than just that and all these things (gifting) is just for showing off," said Imran.

Post "Matru...", Imran will be seen in "Mumbai Talkies" and "Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai Again".

Bipasha Basu flies 35 guests to Goa for birthday party

By Hindustan Times

Bipasha Basu might have turned a year older today, but the actor insists that age is just a number for her. “And honestly, these numbers don’t matter to me much. I have always said that I would love to live till 100, but the journey has to be exciting,” says the 34-year-old who has gone all out for her birthday this year as she has flown 35 people (including family and friends) to Goa for the celebrations. “I always get excited about my birthday. It’s not just about that one day. I celebrate it throughout the month. It’s the most important day for anyone. I don’t understand when people say, ‘Birthdays are no big deal’. If birthdays are no big deal, then life is also not a big deal,” she says.

Although Bipasha refuses to reveal who she is partying with, we found out that her guest-list includes friends like designer Rocky S, fitness trainer Deanne Pandey and her cousins and sisters. However, she does accept that filmmaker-friend Vikram Bhatt was also invited. “But he isn’t really a Goa person,” she says, adding, “My friends keep saying I get as excited as a high-school kid on my birthdays. But I don’t mind that. It’s a compliment.”

Ask her what presents she’s expecting this year and she says jokingly, “I hope I get lots. But the best gift I have given myself is this small break (after launching her workout DVD and shooting for Aatma). At a time when industry is gearing up to get back to work, I am taking a break. But I’ll be back in 10 days.”

Now starring in a ‘creature’ presentation

Last year, they teamed up for Raaz 3. And now, filmmaker Vikram Bhatt and Bipasha Basu are coming together again for what is being touted as India’s first creature film. To be produced by T Series’ Bhushan Kumar, the film has been titled Creature!.

“It will be India’s first ever creature film that will be made on the lines of Predator and Jurassic Park. We will be releasing it in 3D,” says Vikram.

Bhushan adds, “We are happy to announce our next creative collaboration and couldn’t be more excited to be presenting it to Bipasha on her birthday.

The film goes on the floors in May and will be mounted on an international scale.”

Talking about the storyline, Bipasha says, “It will be a completely new experience for me. The film’s treatment is such that it will also test my fitness and strength. I am excited.”

The glittering hot trend in Bollywood

By Hindustan Times

Bollywood ladies are adding generous doses of bling to their wardrobe and stepping out for red carpet events, parties and private dinners in gilded glam. Thus, from blingy vintage-style drapes to chic western cuts, everything’s in vogue.

“Whether it is couture, prêt or the redcarpet, shimmer works across the board. Bling chic is in,” says designer Gaurav Gupta, who thinks gold is going to be a favourite with the fashionable this season. And predictably, industry style-setters have not shied away from flashing some sparklers. “I feel some can carry off the look better than others — Kalki Koechlin, Kangna Ranaut, Anushka Sharma and Sonam Kapoor look great in gilded western cuts,” says designer Suneet Varma.

Street stylistas have taken a cue from the celeb brigade, and are picking up all things bright and shiny online and at flea markets, too. “People are going mad for glitter this season. It’s everywhere — blazers, shoes, skirts, dresses, just about anything,” says online fashion retailer Tanvi Malik. “Jhilmil, crystals, sab yahi maangte hain aaj kal,” says Sonu, a shopkeeper at Sarojini nagar.

HOW TO ACE THE LOOK
It’s easy to go over the top when you are wearing shimmer, so the only way to make it work is by balancing the look. Don’t pair gold with gaudy, gilded accessories. A simple box clutch or a sole statement bangle can do the trick.

Stars to descend on Sangam city

By Hindustan Times

After Hollywood star Catherine Zeta-Jones, now it’s the turn of Bollywood stars Amitabh Bachchan and star couple Akshay Kumar and Twinkle to plan a visit to Sangam city to take a holy dip during Kumbh.

Comedy king Rajpal Yadav has already reached Kumbh mela area on Monday evening to supervise the preparations for making 1.25 crore ‘Shivlingams’ at his guru Devprabhakar Shastri Daddaji’s camp in sector number 8.

Another Bollywood star couple, Ashutosh Rana and television actress Renuka Sahane, would also be arriving at their guru’s pandal to prepare the ‘shivlingams’, which would be immersed at Sangam during Kumbh.

According to sources, Akshay Kumar and Twinkle Khanna would be arriving in the city on January 15, a day after shahi snan (one of the three auspicious bathing days during the 55-day religious event).

They would be staying at Kashi Viswanath Mandap, which is being prepared at sector number 13, in Arail area in Naini.

“Both the star couple would be taking part in yagyas and would participate in the worship of ‘Panchmukhi Shivling’ at the mandap,” revealed sources responsible for managing the mandap. In view of the mela administration’s strict regulation against entry of VVIPs in Kumbh mela area, both have been instructed to maintain secrecy.

Meanwhile, sources in Prayagwal Sabha have confirmed the arrival of the mega-star during the Kumbh. “Last time, he (Bachchan) had came with a priest from Varanasi but the rituals were performed by purohits of Prayagwal Sabha, so this time we have been asked to prepare for the same, “ said a purohit preferring anonymity.

However, another section of Prayagwal Sabha, led by Ajay Pande, has refuted the claim and said, “It’s a tradition that rituals are performed by president of the sabha and I have, till now, not received any news from his side.”

It may be recalled here that Hollywood star Catherine Zeta-Jones had said that she was planning to visit India to attend the Kumbh Mela with her husband Michael Douglas, and her children. She has reportedly said that she wanted to visit the Kumbh Mela for mental solace and
well-being.

Bollywood actor Ranbir Kapoor, who has been roped in to play the main lead in a biopic on legendary performer Kishore Kumar, feels that a singer must be given due credit as he plays a very important role in an actor's life. "Kishore Kumar has sung for my father so many times. While doing
'Bachna Ae Haseeno', I got an opportunity to sing a few lines of his (Kishore Kumar) song too. A singer contributes a lot in an actor's life and must be given credit for that," he told reporters Monday at a press conference here arranged for Colors Screen Awards.

Being a huge fan of the singer, Ranbir, 30, said: "Whenever we talk of Kishore Kumar, all we can say is that he used to sing from his heart."

Kishore Kumar died in 1987 at the of 58. He gave the Indian film industry evergreen hits like "Chalte chalte mere ye geet yaad rakhna", "O Hansini", "Aa chal ke tujhe", "Pyar manga tumhi se", "Pal pal dil ke paas", "Hawa ke saath saath", "Chhukar mere mann ka" and "Jahaan teri ye nazar hai".

The actor also revealed that the script of the film is not ready at the moment.

"It is a great opportunity for me to act in a biopic of Kishore Kumar on screen. The script is not ready at the moment and we are waiting for Anurag Basu to complete it. It is my duty as an actor that I do full justice to it," said Ranbir who proved his versatility with films like "Rockstar" and "Barfi".

Ranbir will not be singing in the film, but "I will try my best to look and act like him".

At the moment, the actor is busy with two of his upcoming films - "Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani" and "Besharam".

Bollywood stars hit out at Asaram Bapu’s controversial remark

By Hindustan Times

What a joke’, ’stupidity’, ‘sense offender’, ‘idiotic’. These are some of Bollywood’s reactions to godman Asaram Bapu’s remark that the Delhi gangrape victim was as guilty as her rapists.

“She should have called the culprits ‘brothers’ and begged before them to stop. Had she recited the
Saraswati mantra, she would not have boarded any bus after watching a movie with her boyfriend,” he said in an interview on Monday.

FarhanThe film industry took to microblogging site Twitter to vent its angst. “A rousing welcome to Asaram bapu into the Sense Offenders Directory. Any guesses who the next misogynist might be??” wrote filmmaker Farhan Akhtar.

“If u asked Mr Asaram about d cure for cancer he wud ask u to recite some mantra. what do v expect from people who live off d misery of people (sic),” tweeted filmmaker Sudhir Mishra.

Filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt says, “These are the so-called holy people who say Indian cinema is the Gangotri of all evil. What a joke. Now the time is here for the nation to decide who’s the worst villain.”

The industry also slammed Asaram’s spokesperson Neelam Dubey, who defended him saying “the remarks were made at a religious discourse in the context of how one should invoke God’s name to avoid incidents like crimes against women.”

“Asaram Bapu Neelam Dubey can u pls give us a jadu ka mantra with which we can suffer the likes of you (sic),” tweeted actor-activist Shabana Azmi.

Young people on Twitter shared the same sentiment. “Am clasping my hands together and begging Asaram Bapu - ‘Brother. Please stop’,” wrote Putul Tiwari. “Spiritual (regressive) gurus like Asaram Bapu are what’s wrong with this country,” tweeted Lokesh Bahety.

Revathi returns to Bollywood

By Hindustan Times

A number of south directors are making Bollywood films this year. Among them is actor-director Revathi, who disappeared from Hindi cinema after directing a multi-lingual film, Mitr: My Friend (2002) and Phir Milenge (2004), which starred Salman Khan, Shilpa Shetty and Abhishek Bachchan.

Actor Jackie Shroff confirms the news. He says, “Revathi is making a feature film in Hindi and I am eager to work with her.” A source adds, “She is in talks with several actors and is narrating her script to all of them.”

Revathi’s Bollywood repertoire includes acting in films like Love (1991), Raat (1992) and more recently, Darna Marna Hai (2003), Ab Tak Chhappan (2004) and Nishabd (2007). Post that, she directed Makal, a segement in the short film Kerala Café (2009) and Parcel, a segment in Mumbai Cutting (2011).

Jackie refuses to divulge details about the new project, saying, “I’m not sure about the genre. I’ll be meeting her soon to read the script.” The actor is currently busy with debutant director Karan Butani’s yet-untitled film, an action-drama set in the interiors of Uttar Pradesh.

Hinting that Revathi’s comeback to Bollywood is a big film, he adds, “I’m not sure who else has been approached or signed as I haven’t met her as yet, but from the brief I got, it’s not going to be a small project.”

BIGG BOSS 6: even I miss the fights and masala, says Salman Khan

By Hindustan Times

With the finale of Bigg Boss 6 set to take place next weekend, host Salman Khan, while relaxing during shooting in a chalet in Lonavala, claims this season had a good run. “Some people loved it while others didn’t,” says Salman Khan, about Bigg Boss 6 .

“The Colors team wasn’t as happy. Perhaps because they wanted more fights, toda-mataadi (breaking things) and all that. Fights in Bigg Boss 6 can get out of hand and are difficult to control. Even I miss the fights and masala. But I feel that there should be a balance.”

This year, he seemed to be actively involved in the show, be it going inside the house or keeping tabs on the contestants. He explains, “I am always involved and as for going in the house, it was the format. I was at ease because I watched all episodes so I am aware of what happened. Now I am wondering what will happen next year.”

So is the next season on then? “Hopefully,” comes the reply.

Who does Salman think may win the show? “Some people are getting lots of votes while others are liked a lot. People with the right balance of votes and likeability are Sana Khan, Niketan Madhok, Urvashi Dholakia and Delnaaz Irani,” Salman says.

The buzz was that Bigg Boss 6 got good TRPs because of Salman. “Other hosts are proper but I behaved like a host of a house and treated guests as friends. I used to be serious, joke with them and confuse them while taking their case,” he says.

The actor is also open to other TV offers. “If I get something interesting, I’d definitely do it. I like television. I get a chance to give back to my fans,” he says.

Varun Dhawan is Ekta Kapoor’s Rs. 2 crore hero

By Hindustan Times

Along with Sidharth Malhotra and Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan made a hit debut with Karan Johar’s Student Of The Year. And now, even as speculations are rife about the trio’s next ventures, we can confirm that Varun is set to star in Ekta Kapoor’s big-budget remake of a south Indian film. The producer,
who is known to be close to Varun’s mentor Karan, has apparently bought the rights to this Telugu film for Rs. 2 cr.

The title of the movie, however, is currently a closely-guarded secret. “Except for Ekta and her core team, no one knows what film this is. Varun has been confirmed for this film, which is apparently Ekta’s most ambitious project till date. It’s going to be a classy romantic comedy. She wants it to be like a modern-day Himmatwala (1983), but the treatment will be plush: on the lines of The Wedding Crashers (2005). The film will go on the floors by mid-year,” says an insider.

Ekta is believed to have beaten several other big names from Bollywood to bag these remake rights. “Salman Khan and Boney Kapoor were also interested in the film, but she went out of her way to seal the deal first,” adds the insider.

In fact, we hear that Ekta has apparently paid three times the amount initially quoted by the makers. “She wanted to the buy the rights immediately after she watched the film. Her team got in touch with the makers and offered them twice the sum they were quoting. However, when the deal was struck, her offer had tripled. She finalised the deal within one night,” says the insider.

Although Varun is already on board, we also have confirmed news that Ekta has something big in store as far as the leading lady and director are concerned. Despite repeated attempts, both Ekta and Varun remained unavailable for comments.

Salman Khan denies fued with Shah Rukh Khan

By Hindustan Times

Bollywood actor Salman Khan has denied reports of `feud` between him and Shahrukh Khan, saying there is no groupism at all in the film industry. "There is no groupism at all... I do my own work. I don`t think there is any groupism. I don`t follow anyone`s life. "If anyone comes to talk or
meet me, I will talk to them or meet them nicely. I don`t care who is whose friend and all. It doesn`t matter to me at all," Salman said.

A spat between Shahrukh and the `Dabangg` star a few years ago set the tongues wagging on a growing chasm between the two top guns. Gossip mills are agog about Shahrukh`s close friend Karan Johar reportedly singing paeans on Salman and apparently sending him feelers for working with him.

Even Priyanka Chopra, who is considered close to the actor, and banners like Yash Raj Films seem to be warming up to Salman. The latest twist to the tale came in the form of SRK loyalist Arjun Rampal. There are reports that Arjun is going to be on Salman`s show `Bigg Boss`.

Arjun reportedly missed SRK`s New Year bash held in Dubai and also praised Salman for his brilliant performance in `Ek Tha Tiger`. Arjun, who delivered hit films like `Om Shanti Om`, `Don` and `Ra.One` with Shahrukh, seemed to be gravitating towards Salman.

When asked if someone who picks up fight with SRK becomes his friend or vice versa, Salman said, "I don`t think so it is that way at all". On a rift between Shahrukh and Arjun, Salman said, "I am not even aware if there is any fight or whatever (between them). I don`t think so (that Arjun is closer to me). I just met him at Sanjay Diwan`s party. We just spoke for two minutes".

Meanwhile, after several seasons of reality show Bigg Boss highlighting fights, contestants hurling abuses, the sixth season has been a `family` show. And Salman is quite happy with the way the show has shaped up till now. "We wanted it that way (family show). To quite an extent it has been like that. Compared to earlier seasons, it has been parivarik (family viewing). The show is moving well and getting good TRPs," Salman said.

In this season contestants like TV actor Rajev Paul, image consultant Imam Siddique were seen picking up fights and abusing but all of this was not as rampant as it was in the previous seasons. "Some people like that (fights). They feel it is entertainment while others don`t. People do abuse when in the house and that is due to the situations. Even in normal life abuses just slip out from people when with friends but no one takes a notice of that," he said.

The contestants present in the house include model Niketan Madhok, model-actress Sana Khan, Imam Siddique, TV actors Urvashi Dholakia, Rajev Paul and Delnaaz Irani. The show began on October 7 and the finale will be held on January 12. From the current crop of contestants Salman thinks Urvashi, Niketan, Sana and Delnaaz have the chances of winning the show.

Success is superficial: Salman Khan (Interview)

salman khan 200x249 BollywoodWorld.com, He has several films in his kitty that have joined the Rs.100-crore club and thanks to them, Salman Khan’s films are perceived as high-yielding projects. But his feet are on the ground and he knows how to handle success, the star says.

Salman’s “Dabangg”, “Bodyguard”, “Ready” “Ek Tha Tiger”, and “Dabangg 2? grossed more than Rs.100 crore at the box office and now producers are making high-stake investments in the star, who says: “I am so used to it (success) by now that I know exactly how I need to take it.”

“I know this is all superficial… I know this is my profession and my work and I get paid for it. But apart from that, it does not go into my head. It’s like a nine-to-five job,” Salman told IANS in an interview.

Does losing success scare him?

“We know that is going to happen. It’s just that how hard you can work to keep it going. How long you can see the distance between the fans and the hero increasing is important,” said the 47-year-old.

A brand in himself, Salman has experienced failure, but in the last five years, he has become one of the most bankable stars in tinsel town. His movies are a hit even before they release.

“I don’t get nervous (before the release of films). I just pray that the hard work, which we put in, shows. Mentally, you are the same, but you worry that you haven’t lost the plot or the character you have played,” said Salman who has featured in about 90 films in the last 25 years.

Starting out as a romantic hero with “Maine Pyar Kiya”, he did many action films too. In fact, his last few releases were only action films.

He feels action works only if it is backed by emotions.

“Till the time action is not backed by emotion, it doesn’t work. In my films, there is action, but there is a lot of romance and emotion as well. In ‘Dabangg 2', relationship between husband-wife and father-son are shown. But as all the action scenes are put in the promo, it looks like an action film…but actually it is not,” he said.

His movie schedules, TV assignment as host of “Bigg Boss 6? and brand endorsements keep him busy.

What about personal time?

“I have lots of time. Why would anyone want to have time for themselves? You are 24 hours with yourself,” he said.

Salman is known for his tiffs with star Shah Rukh Khan but was seen defending him on “Bigg Boss 6? when Imam Siddique, one of the contestants, claimed to have contributed to his success.

“If anyone has become something, it is because of his dedication. We have no right to put somebody down. We don’t get along at all, but what is not right is not right. The fact that SRK comes out of his house and goes to work provides so many people with work…so who are you to take credit for that?” said Salman who doesn’t let his problems with Shah Rukh bother him much.

With success at his feet, Salman’s desire is to work harder and make sure unsung heroes in the industry get their due too.

“I want to work a little harder. I just hope that the other people are also as interested as I am…not in the heroes, but the people in our team,” he said. – IANS

'Yes, Bollywood commodifies women'

By Hindustan Times

At a time when the entire country is asking for dignity and respect for women after the brutal Delhi gangrape, lyrics of hit Bollywood songs like the one above — Fevicol Se, are drawing flak from audiences for objectifying women. And perhaps, in a first from the fraternity, filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt admits that Bollywood does commodify women.

“There is no denying that filmmakers have portrayed women as objects, but it’s time to correct that — to portray women as characters who exercise rights, make decisions, and are in the driving seat of their lives, not as mute animals being led by the chain by the menfolk,” he says.

Bhatt says filmmakers will have to be “sensitive to the environment” because filmmakers are also from the society. “If the society is in turmoil, you need to respond to that turmoil. If people feel that women are being commodified in the media, then you need to pause and introspect. You cannot go on a denial mode, and say, ‘we don’t do anything.’ We should be brave enough to face it and make corrections,” he says.

The filmmaker, however, makes it clear that Bollywood does not contribute to violence against women. “The answer is a resounding no. Indian cinema has portrayed rapists as demons who have been brought to justice by the heroes. There is no credible evidence that Bollywood has contributed to violence against women.”

Also, when asked about the recent criticism of the ‘item number’ culture, he says, “Item songs have not come into existence now. I can think of Helen, who performed cabaret numbers.”

For every three movies or songs that might do that, there are three more that are doing just the opposite — Zareen Khan, actor who has done item songs, on films objectifying women.

Upcoming comedy capers in Bollywood

By Hindustan Times

After a year packed with action and style, Bollywood now offers a list of comedy films in the coming months. So tickle your humorous side with these upcoming comedy capers. Here's a look:

Matru Ki Bijli Ka Mandola
Imran Khan and Anushka Sharma will be seen in a funny avatar in Vishal Bhardwaj's Matru Ki Bijli Ka Mandola. Touted as a comedy film, Matru... presents Imran Khan in an all-new rugged avatar.

Set in the rustic surroundings of a village in Haryana, the film is about Harry Mandola (Pankaj Kapur), a wealthy industrialist who loves his drink, his daughter Bijlee (Anushka Sharma) and the unusual bond they both share with Harry’s man friday, Matru (Imran Khan).

The film will also see Arya Babbar and Shabana Azmi in supporting roles.

Imran Khan was initially very nervous about the role as the character was very tough for him and he thought he had made a big mistake taking it up. "During the first script reading of the film, I was unable to say the Haryanvi dialogues. It was not easy, I felt I made a big mistake and I should back out," he said.

"The role is different. It required a lot of preparation for almost two and a half months. I have always felt that the more we rehearse, the better we perform," Imran added.

All of Bhardwaj's films have strong female characters and the director seems to have maintained the same with his heroine Anushka Sharma as well.

Talking about being paired with Imran for the first time, Anushka said that she never thought they would look like the way they do.

"This is the first time we are working together. I never thought we would look like this. But Imran has looked the hottest in the film," Anushka said.

Release date: January 11, 2013

Ghanchakkar
After The Dirty Picture, Vidya Balan And Emraan Hashmi will be seen for the second time together on the big screen but this time in different roles. Ghanchakkar is a crazy, quirky rollercoaster suspense ride that will surprise, shock and entertain the audience at every turn. The film revolves around the character Sanju which is played by Emraan Hashmi.

After a series of intense roles, actor Vidya Balan will show her funny side in director Raj Kumar Gupta’s Ghanchakkar. Gupta reveals that Vidya will play a quirky Punjabi woman in the film. “Her character will be completely different from what she has played so far,” he says.

Produced by UTV Motion Pictures, Ghanchakkar is a comic thriller. The film stars Emraan Hashmi as a lazy man with a taste for the finer things in life, and Vidya as his ambitious wife, a woman with her own notions about the world. After making a bad decision, the couple encounters two thugs, one with a bad illness and the other with a bad attitude.

Audiences will see a voluptuous Vidya Balan again in the film.

“Vidya wanted to lose weight and go back to her normal body size after the release of TDP. She felt people would associate her only with particular kind of roles. But Raj Kumar was clear that he doesn’t Vidya to cut the flab and communicated the same to her,” said an insider.

It took Vidya time to agree to do the film, adds the director. “But our admiration for each other helped me make her understand how much I’m looking forward to her playing the character, which is why she finally agreed to do the film,” said Gupta.

Ghanchakkar is a departure from the usual even for Gupta. His last two films, Aamir (2008) and No One Killed Jessica, were inspiring stories that he wanted to tell. “It wasn’t a conscious decision to do a comedy film, but as a filmmaker, I want to explore different genres,” says Gupta. “Parves Sheikh and I have written the script together. I wanted a co-writer to help me do justice to the material which is not innate to me.”

Ranbir will sport a macho look in this film. "He will need to put on some muscle as he will be shooting quite a few fighting sequences," Pradeep Bhatia, the actor's trainer, from Elixir Fitness, Andheri, Mumbai told HT Cafe.

Pallavi Sharda will be seen opposite Ranbir Kapoor.

Ranbir is also expected to share the screen with his dad Rishi Kapoor and mom Neetu Singh.

Release date: October 2, 2013

Chennai Express
One is Bollywood's uncrowned king of romance, known to strike a pose on streets while singing for the woman he's wooing. The other is famous for making masala action films, where the hero gets down and dirty, beats up a dozen baddies and makes cars fly.

So what can you expect when Shah Rukh Khan (his last release, the Rs. 100 cr grosser, Jab Tak Hai Jaan, reaffirmed his romantic hero status) and director Rohit Shetty come together?

It seems, next year, SRK will don a completely new avatar. The actor's next is Rohit Shetty's action film, Chennai Express, in which he stars opposite Deepika Padukone. Rohit, part of whose fame rests on being the director of Ajay Devgn-starrer Singham (2011), is all set to make SRK perform stunts like he never has before.

A source close to Chennai Express says, "Rohit's films are popular for the action scenes. Whether they are comedies, like the Golmaal series, or they involve hand-to-hand combat, like Singham did, they have masala action, and Chennai Express will be no different. Audiences would never have imagined SRK performing stunts of this sort." Hard as it may be, try to picture SRK in Singham or Rowdy Rathore.

This is the first time both SRK and Deepika are working with Rohit Shetty. King Khan seems happy with the experience as he tweeted, "CE: Good shoot, good people, good vibes, good fun. Everyone feels, it's sad the schedule is coming to an end. But v will be bak! Reddy..Steddy.."

Right moves? Remo D'Souza to copyright dance sequences in ABCD

By Hindustan Times

Bollywood is plagued with cases involving copyright issues, with filmmakers going to great lengths to protect their ideas. Now, choreographer-director Remo D’Souza has taken this protection to, quite literally, the next step by bringing the dance steps from his next film under the same regulations. He has decided to copyright certain moves from the song ‘Bezubaan’ from his forthcoming directorial venture ABCD — Any Body Can Dance, to prevent infringement.

“Like a film, dance steps or sequences are creative works. If a script can have a copyright, and so can songs, why can’t dance sequences as well? I want to take this forward and copyright the sequence that I have conceived and used for the song ‘Bezubaan’. It’s the first number that we are rolling out,” says Remo.

The song featuring reality show Dance India Dance’s winners (who also play lead characters in the film) and Lauren Gottlieb from the American reality show So You Think You Can Dance, features all the characters grooving in the rain. Remo says, “I don’t want this to be copied and used in a manner that doesn’t fit its extravagance, as it is shown in the movie.”

Since, the awards season has just begun, is Remo looking to charge royalties if organisers wish to add these steps to their stage performances? “Of course, if I have the copyright no will be able to perform the same steps on any platform. If they wish to, they can pay me royalty,” says Remo, who is making the copyright effective early next week, before he releases the song.

Salman Khan wants to cast Naseeruddin Shah and Tabu

salman khan pic 4 200x208 BollywoodWorld.com, Salman Khan may star with actors Naseeruddin Shah and Tabu in the Hindi remake of the Telugu hit ‘Stalin’ titled ‘Radhe’. Sources have revealed that the two actors are in talks to feature in this film, which will be directed by Salman’s brother, Sohail Khan. If you remember, Radhe was the character name from Salman’s own blockbuster ‘Tere Naam’.

Stalin was 2006 major Telugu money-spinner. The role performed by Salman Khan was originally enacted by telugu mega-star Chiranjeevi. The film is about a Major Stalin who invents a Principal to help others in life. Stalin was loosely based on a Hollywood Film titled ‘Pay It Forward’ that had Kevin Spacey and Helen Hunt. The Telugu version was directed by ‘Ghajini’ fame A.R.Murugadoss and it garnered 15 Crores business in it’s opening weekend.

Sources also added about Salman Khan personally taking care of all the aspects of this film as he wants to re-boot brother Sohail Khan’s career back as a Director. “It was at Salman’s insistence that Tabu and Naseer were contacted. Salman felt that the duo could give the film a touch of class.” adds the Source.

Leander Paes wants to explore himself as an actor

By Hindustan Times

He has ruled the world of tennis for more than a decade and now Leander Paes wants to make an impact in Bollywood. The 39-year-old, who made his film debut with Rajdhani Express recently, reveals that he is considering taking up acting as a serious profession.

“I’ve entertained everyone with tennis for years and now it’s time to entertain my fans with some hard-hitting real stories that I believe in. I’d like to do more films. I am now looking at myself as a student of acting,” he says.

Ask him if tennis will take a back seat now and Paes says, “Not at all. I am playing full calendar. Honestly, I love my tennis life and feel lucky to be a tennis player. But now I want to explore myself as an actor as I feel I’ve achieved all that I could in the world of tennis.” He adds, “I was offered a film way back in 1996 after I won an Olympic medal in Atlanta. But back then, I had tennis aspirations and did not take up the project.”

Interestingly, it is not only Bollywood, but also Hollywood that is beckoning Paes now. The man, whose future project includes a graphic novel (slated for a summer release this year), reveals, “I’ve got a Hollywood script on my table and I am reading it at the moment. Honestly, I want to focus on one project at a time.”

Talking about his daughter Aiyana, Leander confesses that she has been his greatest inspiration in life. Ask him about Aiyana’s reaction to Rajdhani express and he says, “She’s watched the songs and promos and already knows the lyrics of Koi Umeed by heart."
