I don’t miss anything about Bollywood: Kumar Gaurav

By HT

Actor Kumar Gaurav doesn’t harbour any Regrets about turning his back on films

You’ve been dormant in Bollywood since the early 1990s. What has kept you occupied?
Gaurav: I’ve been keeping busy in life. I have a travel business in Maldives and I
was into some construction (business). I’ve not been doing films because I haven’t been getting good offers. Nothing interesting has come my way.

The day I get one, I’ll do it because I want to believe in it and enjoy it. I just don’t want to do films for the heck of it.

Don’t you miss showbiz?
Gaurav: I don’t miss anything about showbiz or Bollywood. My stardom was God’s grace and I am grateful to all my fans and appreciate their love for me. But I very much like my space. I’d rather stay with my family than go out.

Do you regret making wrong choices in your career?
Gaurav: I don’t have any regrets. You win some, you lose some. That’s the journey of a professional.

Didn’t your failures hurt you?
Gaurav: It didn’t hurt me personally. I did a job and it didn’t work. It is the audience’s job to judge us. If we fail, we try again and try harder and if even that doesn’t work, you move on. I don’t run away from anything.

Did you ever feel the pressure of being Rajendra Kumar’s son?
Gaurav: Initially I did feel the pressure because there were expectations because of my dad’s name. But I did whatever I could, to the best of my abilities.

Do you think the industry has been too quick in forgetting you?
Gaurav:If they don’t remember me, it doesn’t matter to me.

Any plans to ever take up direction?
Gaurav: I thought about it at times but soon gave up the idea. It is not my cup of tea.

Are you a recluse?
Gaurav:No. I’m a nature lover. I don’t like the cities. I have a house in Goa and I often escape to spend time there. I like travelling and wandering into the wilderness. I call Maldives my second home and I scuba dive a lot there.

How do you think Bollywood has changed since your time?
Gaurav:Bollywood has become very competent. Technically, it has changed a lot and for better. It has gone to a higher level.

Will your daughters venture into films?
Gaurav:No. The kids are not interested in films. Saachi is studying literature and Siyaa is into fashion designing.

What does their mother do?
Gaurav: My wife does charity and looks after the home.

Are you happy in life now?
Gaurav: I’m very happy and content. I’m enjoying life. This is the best phase of my life.

Industry speak
SANJAY GUPTA,director
Bunty is a fab actor. He has always been one of my favourite heroes. He chose to not do films because he didn’t like the film offers. After Love Story, there were a couple of wrong choices he made. But he is an extremely chilled out guy. He is a hardcore family man. He’d rather be at home than be on sets.

SHERNAZ PATEL, actor
I remember him as an absolutely giving co-star in Janam (1986). He was very encouraging and created a very safe environment for me to work. We clicked really well. I think he just fell prey to the nature of this ugly business. A person extremely talented and loved by the audiences suddenly disappeared.

Dilip Kumar gets candid on 90th birthday

By Hindustan Times

Bollywood stalwart Dilip Kumar turns 90 today. And he looks back at his life with a sense of satisfaction and some surprise at certain twists and turns to an otherwise normal, serene life. He gets candid about life on his big day.

You turn 90 on December 11. 90 is just a number especially when one considers a life as well-lived as yours. Sir, as you look back what do you think about the 90 years of your life?
I can look back at my life with a sense of satisfaction and some surprise at certain events that have added the twists and turns to an otherwise normal, serene life.

Dilip Saab, in the 90 years which events would you regard as the greatest events and milestones in your astounding life?
My entry into the profession of acting, which was most unexpected. My marriage to a beautiful girl years younger to me, with whom I had declined to co-star because she was too young to be my leading-lady, my decision to challenge myself by switching over to comedy when I was being hailed for my intense tragic roles that had evoked public esteem and adulation.

Every actor wants to be like you. You have defined fine and brilliant acting for 6 decades. You have spawned generations of admirers from Mr Bachchan to Shah Rukh Khan. How do you evaluate your own contribution as an actor?
I have seriously pondered over this because the question has been put to me so many times. I guess it is a normal instinct to follow an example if you are drawn to it for whatever attributes you admire in that example. An actor should possess a strong instinct, besides a mind of his own and a striking personality. He should be able to absorb the positive and delete the negative from the influences that are bound to crowd his mind. The mind has to be respected and obeyed when it tells you to accept or reject an influence.

What qualities should an actor cultivate?
It is not for me to generalise on the dos and don'ts. Every actor I watched in my formative years had his own individualistic qualities and assets. I had the discrimination fortunately at that age - I was only 20 - to decide that I had to be patient and pick only those films I liked to work in. There were times in the early phase of my career when I needed the big money that was being offered to me after some of my films became box office hits. But I resisted accepting them because I did not relate to those scripts and propositions.

Your refusal must have upset a lot of producers?
The producers who came to me with those offers felt they had the role of a lifetime for me, a newcomer. They advised me that it was foolish to refuse the offers when the going was so good because in show business you have to show that you are in great demand and you are extremely busy. I could have been swayed by the talk but it was my basic strength of discrimination that helped me to be firm and go by what my mind told me to do. So if you judge from my career it is the quality of patience and discrimination that paid off. It cannot be the general thumb rule because I know of actors who worked in six films simultaneously and were gloriously happy and relaxed.

Dilip Saab, you have worked with the most exquisite actresses, from Madhubalaji to Sairaji. Who were your favourites, and why?
I was never the one to choose my co-stars. That prerogative was the producers and directors. When I teamed with Meena Kumari in Azaad, she was also changing gears (from serious roles to comedy). We hit it off in light-hearted acting and it encouraged the makers of Kohinoor to cast us again in lively roles. She made a delightful co-star and we got along well outside our work because we shared a taste for good Urdu poetry.

And Madhubala?
Madhubala was very vivacious as an artiste and person. It was in Tarana that our pairing became noticed, though most film lovers cherish her gorgeous screen presence in Mughal E Azam. Waheeda Rehman was wonderfully sprightly in Ram Aur Shyam and equally intense in Dil Diya Dard Liya. As for Saira, it was only when we began work in Sagina that I realized how capable Saira was. She handled the dramatic scenes with amazing confidence and with little help from me. It clearly demonstrated her latent potential that had remained untapped in all the romantic musicals she came to be adored for.

Who was your favourite co-star?
I have consistently rated Nalini Jaywant as a formidable co-star. She was the only actress who could take me by surprise in the final take if I was not alert enough thanks to the natural spontaneity she possessed.

Enacting Marathi roles seems to be the flavour of the season - News

KHILADI 786 which has been released this Friday has Asin enacting the role of Marathi mulgee for the first time on the silver screen. It is within a matter of a few months during the current year that leading ladies have been enacting the role of Marathi mulgee. In the beginning of this year, Priyanka Chopra enacted the role of a Marathi girl in AGNEEPATH, which was more of a sober version of the spitfire act that she had enacted in KAMINEY and it was followed by Rani Mukherji in AIYYAA and now it is Asin doing the same with KHILADI 786.

When one plays or enacts the role of a Marathi female character on the screen, it provides an opportunity to bring about a rustic performance with a sense of chutzpah that characterizes the spirit of Mumbai, or rather the carefree and confident attitude, which is the hallmark of a Marathi woman living in Mumbai and even in the interiors of Maharastra.

In the maze of portrayals that a female actor gets to perform these days, most of the times the female actors get to enact the role of an urban woman, which does not provide an opportunity for the actors to bring in some sense of personal touch to the performance to make it an outstanding one. The opportunity to enact the role of a Marathi woman provides the chance to the female actors to bring in a certain sense of rustic peppered with the modernity that is a by-product of living in a metropolis like Mumbai and it has indeed thrown up the opportunity to make the performance stand out as a hallmark performance.

CHECK OUT: Akshay-Asin's KHILADI 786 posts a healthy weekend!

It would be interesting to watch out whether for Asin that opportunity has been provided to her with KHILADI 786, but if one were to go by the past performance of enacting such roles by the film actresses, then the history indeed is illustrative. One of the most scintillating performances that immediately comes to mind is that of Madhuri Dixit in SAILAAB, particularly the song- Humko hai aajkal intezaar. Among such significant performances of enacting the role of a Marathi girl on screen, one can bring into relief the role played by Geeta Baali in JAAL incidentally which carved a niche for her as a woman of an independent mind, thanks to the role that she got to play. Smita Patil's performance in BHUMIKA is another such creditable performance as a Marathi girl on screen. Even a Katrina Kaif set the screen ablaze with her Marathi mulgee performance in AGNEEPATH and it has become among her significant performances in her acting sojourn and Vidya Balan came out with flying colors in FERRARI KI SAWAARI though both of them did item numbers but these songs became the talk of the town and were in themselves responsible for bringing in the audience in the cinema halls.

May be, now that the new breed of writers is emerging, more so who have grown around Mumbai and seen the real life Marathi women characters making their mark in day-to-day life, they are writing about such characters on to the silver screen.

Such change in dynamics is also a reflection on the fact that the writers are trying to bring in characters on the screen which appear realistic, and one only hopes that more such characters of the likes that Asin is playing in KHILADI 786 would be seen being enacted by other mainstream actors as well.
